Radio Scanners

Radio scanners are great fun, listening to all the local frequencies around you! My interest in ham radio came from listening to my trusty radio scanner I had (and still do) loads and loads of fun and they are really interesting to listen to and with a hand held radio scanner you can take the action with you! There are also base station scanners available too!

You can store your favourite frequencies in memory channels once you have found the station you want to listen to so you can revert back to it at the push of a button a good frequency to listen out for is 145.500Mhz which is the 2 meter ham radio calling frequency.

I have had so much fun over the years listening to the police before they went digital here in the UK about 10 years ago now but there is still a lot of things out there that will interest you.

I currently have 3 radio scanners, one hand held and a base scanner and a mobile one my hand held I use is a realistic pro 29 and my base scanner is a Realistic pro 2042 and my mobile is a Realistic Pro 2029 (I do like Realistic J ) These are no longer made and things have moved on quite a lot since these were made but they are still a good all round radio scanner!

Fancy listening to your local night security guard or even you local supermarket or even the store detectives there are endless possibilities you can even listen to the aircraft frequencies or even the military. (Check the laws in your country as some frequencies are illegal to listen to in certain countries)

There are so many different frequencies available to listen to it really is amazing! And of course when buying your radio scanner you need to establish what frequencies you are wanting to listen to as there are so many to choose from.  A good idea of frequencies is listed below:

68-88 MHz (VHF Lo)

108-136.975 (Aircraft)

137-144 (VHF Hi)

144-148 (2 meter ham radio band)

148-174 (VHF Hi)

406-450 (70cms ham radio and UHF Lo)

450-470 (UHF Lo)

470-512 (UHF Hi)

806-956 (UHF Hi)

You can also buy a very good directory of frequencies called the UK scanning directory you can pick these up brand new in the UK for about £20 for USA I am not sure what directory is available but I’m sure a quick Google search will answer your questions.
